PALM HARBOR, FL, USA (December 12, 2011) - Masons from Dunedin and around the county gathered for their monthly Festive Board with their spouses. This month, the group celebrated the end of the year and Christmas at the Dockside restaurant in Palm Harbor. A group of 24 Masons and wives were on hand for the event. The Festive Board is a gathering of local Masons who enjoy a social outing with their family and friends; it is not a Lodge sanctioned event. Hosting the event was Dunedin's W:.Mike Palenik, PM, and his wife Susan.

Guests were treated to a fine buffet dinner, several toasts, and a collection of "grab-bag" gifts. In particular, W:.BJ "Mr. Potato Head" Sammon enjoyed his warm blanket which he was proud to display (see photo).

Attendees had a great time winding down the Masonic year, and enjoying friendship. As a special note: Thanks to Robin Panzanno for her fine desserts she made herself.

PALM HARBOR, FL, USA (December 10, 2011) - Masons from Sutherland Lodge No. 174 F.& A.M. and Dunedin Lodge No. 192 F.& A.M. joined together for the annual Palm Harbor Christmas Parade.

The procession was led by our District Deputy Grand Master R:.W:.Richard Brooks, PM, an Honorary Member of Dunedin, a Past Master of Sutherland Lodge, current Junior Warden of East Gate Lodge No. 355, and current Vice President of the SunCoast Masters & Wardens Association (yea, he's a busy guy).

This year, Sutherland Lodge was able to secure an antique fire truck, courtesy of the East Lake Fire Department (where some Sutherland Brothers are from). The truck was well decorated for the holidays and carried several people. The Brothers wore white aprons and distributed beads to the people lining the parade route. W:.Ken Warner, PM, of Sutherland, again entertained the crowd with Christmas music on his tuba. The parade route went from Westlake Village, down Nebraska Avenue, to Omaha, and to the downtown area on Florida Avenue.

The Brothers participating in the parade included:

FROM SUTHERLAND - W:.Greg Scott, Bro. Larry Pomeroy, Scott MacAuley, Rob Fisher, and W:.Ken Warner, PM.

FROM DUNEDIN - W:.Tim Bryce, PM, W:.BJ Sammon, PM, Bro. Matt Panzano, and the DDGM.

This was a great way to wind down the Masonic year, promote the fraternity, and put smiles on the faces of children lining the parade route.

DUNEDIN, FL, USA (November 28, 2011) - As has become a tradition for the last seven years, Dunedin Masonic Lodge No. 192 recognized a Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputy for outstanding service to the community. The 2011 "Deputy of the Year" award was presented to Deputy Tom Hoddinott at a special dinner held at Kally-K's Restaurant in Dunedin. Making the presentation was W:.Ken Giesow, PM of Dunedin Lodge. Also in attendance was Major Wayne Morris, Deputy Hoddinott's supervisor, along with fellow officers from the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, "Deputy Tom Hoddinott has been a Pinellas County Sheriff's deputy since July 1985. He started out in the Detention and Corrections Bureau and has served in various capacities with the agency including Patrol Operations and the Criminal Investigations Division where he worked in the Property Crimes Section assigned to the City of Dunedin. He is currently assigned to the Patrol Operations Bureau working out of the North District Station on Dayshift."

On August 26, 2011 Deputy Hoddinott was on patrol in the City of Dunedin driving north on Pinehurst Road. Deputy Hoddinott noticed a suspicious vehicle backed into the driveway of a residence. Upon investigation, he discovered and broke up a major marijuana farm being grown inside the residence. Based on the Deputy's intuition, coupled with his many years of experience, resulted in an excellent self-initiated criminal case being made. The male who burglarized the home was arrested for Residential Burglary and Violation of Probation and the owner of the house was arrested for felony Manufacturing/Cultivation of Marijuana. This subject was also currently on probation for a previous charge of Sale, Manufacture and Delivery of Marijuana. The equipment used to grow the marijuana was disabled and 33 marijuana plants were taken off the street. For this self-initiated act which contributed to a valuable law enforcement accomplishment, and for the outstanding work he does every day, Deputy Hoddinott was nominated to be Dunedin Lodge's Deputy of the Year.

For his efforts, Dunedin Lodge gave Deputy Hoddinott a dinner in his honor, awarded him a plaque, and a gift of $100 which the Deputy immediately donated to the Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch which helps to prevent delinquency and develop strong, lawful, resilient, and productive citizens who will make a positive contribution to our communities for years to come.

According to the Master of the Lodge, W:.Mike Palenik, PM "Dunedin Lodge is proud of our long tradition of supporting local law enforcement personnel. On behalf of the Lodge, we congratulate Deputy Hoddinott and thank him for his years of service and dedication. We are proud of the PCSO."

FLORIDA MASONIC ZONE 6 CHILD ID PROGRAM

RW Brooks (center) and his Child ID crew

DUNEDIN, FL, USA (August 27, 2011) - With many county and local law enforcement agencies reducing their crime prevention programs, and, as a result, eliminating or reducing their child identification programs, many schools, churches, and local governments are looking to civic organizations to fill the void. Masonic Lodges throughout Florida are stepping up and providing this free service to the communities they are a part of.Masonic Lodges from three different districts joined forces and implemented the "Child ID Program" for 192 children in Pinellas County. The week prior to the start of school is always a busy one for parents and their families. Zone 6 Districts 20, 21, and 23, held three "Child ID Program" events on August 23rd, 27th, and 28th, at three different locations in Pinellas County.

On August 27th, 2011, the City of Safety Harbor, the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, and the Safety Harbor Neighborhood Family Center, held a "Back-to-School" backpack giveaway at the Safety Harbor City Park. Over 1000 backpacks were given away at this event. Upon the request of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, the Zone 6 Masonic Lodges volunteered to implement the "Child ID Program" at this event. With family members completing the registration forms, the children’s height and weight was obtained, and then fingerprints and photographs were secured. Everything was then placed on a CD and given to the parents. Over 60 children were processed through the Masonic Child ID Program on this day. Participating at this event from District 20 were Richard Brooks, DDGM, DDGM of District 20 and Honorary Member of Dunedin Lodge, Chris Laughlin, B.J. Sammon, PM, Ken Young, Mike Palenik, PM, and Andy Van Arsdale from Dunedin Lodge No. 192, Sean Meyenburg, Clearwater Lodge No. 127, and Sergei Zhurkov, Sutherland Lodge No. 174. Representatives from District 21 included, John Hickey, PDDGM, Star Lodge No. 78, and Charlie Clinker, St. Petersburg Lodge No. 139. And finally, from District 23, Zone 6 Child ID Program Chairman David Rasmus, Temple Terrace Lodge No. 330.

Also participating in this event were Kim and Christopher Laughlin, Sue Palenik, and Mrs. Charlie Clinker. As the event wound down we were able to speak with Deputy Chuck Skipper from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Community Policing Unit. He was grateful that the Zone 6 Masonic Lodges had stepped up to the plate and agreed to assist in this worthwhile event. As a former Crime Prevention Deputy for the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, he was truly impressed with the equipment used by the Masonic Lodges to perform this service to the community. Additionally, he stated that the way the event was organized and operated was very impressive.

If interested in participating in these Child ID Programs in the future, please contact your District Child ID Program coordinator.

DUNEDIN, FL, USA (JUNE 1, 2011) - The Brothers of Dunedin Masonic Lodge No. 192 F.& A.M. were pleased to be on hand at Dunedin Elementary for the school's year-end Assembly program recognizing scholastic achievement by the students. Accordingly, the Lodge provided bicycles for the school's top readers as part of their "Bikes for Books" program. The program is administered by the school, whereby students earn points for the books they read throughout the school year. At the end of the year, the top boy and girl readers from each grade (K - 5th) are recognized by the Masons in the form of a new bicycle. This was the third year the Masons sponsored the "Bikes-forBooks" program.

Mrs. Kathy Brickley, the Principal of Dunedin Elementary, appreciated the efforts by the Masons. Cindy Borland, the school's Reading/Literacy Coach said, "This program has encouraged the students to embrace reading. We hope this will be a habit that will stay with them for a lifetime."

Dunedin Masons on hand for the presentation included: W:.Tim Bryce, PM, W:.Ken Giesow, PM, Bro. Chris Laughlin, W:.Mike Palenik, PM, Bro. Ken Rowe. and W:.Rome Scerbo, PM.

According to Ken Giesow, the Lodge/School liaison, "This is the third year we have implemented the Bikes for Books program and we're told that it is having a positive effect on encouraging the students to read. This is a program that was originally created by Masonic Lodges in the western United States, but we're the first Lodge to implement the program in Florida. All of the bikes were paid for by individual donations by members of Dunedin Lodge."

Deputy Spencer Gross of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Department was also on hand to give a brief lecture on bicycle safety to the students and presented free bicycle helmets to the winners.

Dunedin Lodge is pleased with the results of the program and wants to perpetuate it in the years ahead. According to the Master of Dunedin Lodge, W:.Mike Palenik, PM, "Masons have long been supporters of public school systems, Dunedin Lodge is no exception. We are proud of our relationship with Dunedin Elementary and pleased to support them not only with the 'Bikes for Books' but with other programs as well. Youth represents the future for all of us. It is just common sense that we support them any way we can."

DUNEDIN, FL, USA (April 25, 2011) - Local Masons gathered to hold a Festive Board at Dunedin Brewery featuring a Chili Cookoff. Participating were Masons from Dunedin Lodge No. 192 and East Gate Lodge No. 355. Approximately 30 people attended the event which was organized by W:.Mike Palenik, PM, Master of Dunedin Lodge, and featured six entries. Judging the competition was the District Deputy Grand Master of the 20th Masonic District R:.W:.Bob Matheson, PM, and his Marshall, W:.Richard Brooks. PM.

The judges evaluated texture, smell, ingredients, taste, and other criteria in order to render a decision. This was a blind taste-test as the entries were numbered and the chefs unknown. All entries were excellent and quite imaginative in their ingredients (particularly the "Polish Chili"). The winning entry was from Dunedin's W:.Tim Bryce, PM who was pleased to accept the award which carried a cash prize (which Bro. Bryce donated to charity). The judges found his "Colon Blow" entry not too spicy, not too sweet; just right.

Local Masons hold a Festive Board on a monthly basis and welcome spouses, family, friends, and candidates for the fraternity. This is not a Lodge sponsored event.

Congratulations one and all on a fine chili cookoff.
